Frequently Asked Questions

The Mat King answers some of our customers most popular questions

Q. Why does one mat hold more water than another?

A.
Different mats hold water for two primary reasons. The first is the ridge depth of the mat pattern. This depth allows water and soil to settle below the shoe print and keeping dirt and moisture away from your floor. The other reason is pile height. The high of the material that is affixed to the mat allows a mat to hold more water. The longer the pile, the more the mat will hold.

Q. What is the best mat for handling snow and slush?

A.
Heavy snow and slush is handled with a two mat system. For outside, use an all rubber, flow through mat from our Wet Area mat section. This type of mat allows heavy slush to fall between the mat holes as a first step. On the interior, use one of our Grand Premier, Premier or Classic mats for secondary wiping and scraping. These finish the job by trapping remaining moisture and dirt in the mat and away from your floors.

Q. My old mat seems to creep along the floor. We are endlessly straightening them out. How can we avoid this problem?

A.
Use the Gripper Backing for mats that are placed on hard surfaces. The gripper backing provides extra surface area for the mat to rest on, providing better protection from mat slippage. On carpeted surfaces, choose an underlayment depending on your type of carpet. All interior and entrance mats have this option.

Q. How different are these mats from the old coconut mat we have in front of the door at my house?

A.
The traditional coconut (or coir) mats provide a distinctive look but do have drawbacks. Most of our mats use solution dyed nylon that is sealed into either SBR or Nitrile rubber. This prevents mat ‘shedding’, an all too common occurrence with coir mats. Also, coir mats discolor easily over time, either from sunlight or heavy use and are easily susceptible to mold. Our entrance and interior mats provide superior UV protection and won’t run or fade, even with heavy use.

Q. How color-fast are your custom logo mats? Do they fade in the sun?

A.
Our Custom Logo Mats are made from long-wearing, static-dissipative nylon and should only be used indoor or under well covered outdoor areas. Since we use a detailed, custom printing process, the vibrant colors of your custom logo are best preserved in a controlled environment.

Q. How quickly will I get my mat?

A.
Most mat orders are shipped in less than 15 working days. For custom mats this shipping time can increase if proofs of supplied artwork are needed. An additional 2-3 days is an ample timeframe for this process.

Q. How are your mats shipped to me? How much will my shipping costs be?

A.
We offer Free UPS Ground Shipping on orders over $75. Below $75, mats are shipped via UPS and shipping charges can vary by the size and weight of the mat. You will be shown your shipping charges at the time of mat purchase.

Q. When do I know when my mat needs to be cleaned?

A.
Mats should be cleaned regularly using a standard upright vacuum, carpet cleaner or industrial washing machine depending on the mat (See mat cleaning chart). Mats should be cleaned as soon as you notice moisture and soil tracking around the mat or when the mat begins to darken in color.

Q. Are these mats a tripping hazard?

A.
XpressMats have two basic anti-trip features. The first is our low profile, SBR rubber borders. These borders prevent trip hazards, but also keep water and dirt from leaking onto the floor. The second is the optional gripper backing that keep mats from slipping – the number one reason for mat accidents. This option works best on hard surfaces or on carpeting with loop construction.

Q. Are your mats imported? Where are they made?

A.
Our mats are all manufactured here in the United States and are backed with a 100% Satisfaction Warranty.

Q. Will my door get stuck on the mat?

A.
Most mats in the entrance category are ½” or less. To measure your door clearance, take a used deck of cards and place the stack about 6” from the door in its near closed position. Next open the door very slowly, allowing the bottom of the door to push off cards that are above the doors base. Pick up the remaining cards, set them on a table and measure the height.

Q. I live in an area with high humidity and mold. Will these mats get moldy? If so, how can I prevent this problem?

A.
See The Mat King's Article 'Why your matted floors are off-color?'

Q. Are the mats a fire hazard? Do they have a fire rating?

A.
All of our entrance and interior mats pass flammability standards DOCFFI-70 except for Brush Hog, ColorStar and ColorStar Crunch.

Q. Can I put my mat into a washing machine? Will it fade? Will it be the same after washing?

A.
See our mat cleaning chart for more information on mat maintenance.
